Scoliosis Physiotherapy Treatment in Dubai

What is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a deformity of the spinal column that produces a curvature in the spine, generating a deviation of it to one side instead of being straight.
Scoliosis is an orthopedic disease, which affects the normal alignment of the spine, its growth, and functionality. Scoliosis is present in 1-3% of the population and often begins in childhood or before the age of 10.

There are several types of scoliosis based on the cause and age when the curvature develops. Scoliosis is twice as common in girls as in boys. It can be seen at any age but is more common after the age of 10. Scoliosis is often hereditary, however, there is no correlation in the severity of the curvature from one generation to the next.

Seek Treatment from a Trusted Scoliosis Teatment Practitioner

Scoliosis is not contagious. It is not caused by poor posture, flat feet, lack of calcium, diet, exercise, or wearing heavy backpacks. Nothing that the patient has done or that the parents have not done causes scoliosis. Most cases are of unknown cause and are referred to as Idiopathic Scoliosis.

  1. Congenital scoliosis is caused by vertebral malformations.
  2. Syndromic scoliosis is associated with diseases such as Sprengel Syndrome, Mucopolysaccharidosis, Rett, etc.
  3. Neuromuscular scoliosis is caused by a problem in the nervous system, such as in patients with PCI (Infantile Cerebral Palsy); muscular dystrophy, pennyroyal, etc.

Some curves can be seen when the patient is standing, but others cannot until the patient leans forward.
In addition to a curve in the back, other signs can be seen:

  • shoulder slope
  • scapula asymmetry
  • Impingement or erasure of the crease at the waist
  • Asymmetry of the gluteal folds
  • pelvic imbalance
  • Lower extremity dysmetria
  • spinal imbalance
  • Humpbacks in the dorsal or lumbar region

If scoliosis is suspected, the back will need to be examined. X-rays will be requested to confirm the diagnosis and to measure the degree of deformity that it presents.
Early diagnosis is very important to stop the progression of the deformity and prevent the patient from having respiratory problems, back pain in the future, or even poor aesthetics.

The type of treatment for scoliosis varies depending on the severity of the deformity and the years of growth remaining. Therefore, an important factor to control is the rate of growth in height of the patient. It is essential to monitor height at each check-up to set the correct treatment guideline.

The treatment of scoliosis depends on the shape, degree, location of the scoliotic curve, age, degree of bone maturation, and the changes that the curve presents over time. If the scoliotic curve is less than 20°, you probably don’t need treatment and regular checkups will be indicated to make sure the curve doesn’t progress until growth stops.
Patients who have curves between 20° and 40° and continue to increase, will be indicated the use of a corset, which is used only in children and teenagers who are growing. The brace does not cure scoliosis; it only limits curve progression if used correctly. Surgical treatment of scoliosis is generally indicated in advanced curves.
